Rolling Thunder — My First Year as a Creator, Unfiltered
I would love to hear from you! Send me a text.
One year ago I had 315 followers and absolutely no idea what I was doing.
Today I have over 32,000 — and the follower count is honestly the least interesting part of the story.
In this episode of Champagne Smiles and Magical Miles I am pulling back the curtain on my first full year of building a social media presence from scratch. Not the highlight reel version. The real version. The numbers, the brands, the platforms, the red flags, the lessons I learned the hard way, and the thing nobody tells you about what this journey actually becomes when you stick with it.
As a healthcare executive I make decisions about social media strategy every day. And I got into this because I wanted to understand it from the inside before making decisions about it from the outside. What I did not expect was that it would become one of the most meaningful creative outlets of my life — and the launchpad for this podcast, an original single, and a level of community I genuinely did not see coming.
Here is what we are covering in this episode:
Why I started and what I was not expecting. The tools that actually work — Riverside, CapCut, and the honest truth about AI content generation. What I have learned about community — the longtime family and friends who showed up for something new, and the supportive strangers who found me through the algorithm and decided to stay. The real numbers — approximately fifteen thousand dollars in gifted product and five thousand dollars in paid work in year one. The platform roadmap nobody gives you — from Social Cat and Parallel when I was just starting out, to Impact, Aspire, ShopMy, LTK, and Hummingbirds where I spend most of my energy now. The red flags and watch-outs — never pay to work, free is not always free, gifted does not mean obligated, and how to vet a brand before you say yes. The brands that trusted me early — K18, PMD Beauty, DIBS Beauty, Whish Beauty, Vivrelle, Chicwish, Freestyle Snacks, Knix, iHerb, Grove, Midi Health, Naked, Promix, and Jenni Lane.
This week’s word is consistency. Not the every day kind — the keep coming back kind. The kind that compounds even when you cannot see it working.
This episode is for anyone who is building something from scratch and wondering if it is worth it. Anyone who has ever felt like the worst at something they are still showing up for. Anyone who wants the real roadmap instead of the highlight reel.
I call it rolling thunder. Some days a brand deal lands. Some days it is crickets. The consistency is the thing.
And if you are just starting out — start before you are ready. You do not need 32,000 followers to begin. You need 315 and a reason to keep going.
